Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format developed by Adobe in the 1990s for presenting documents, including text formatting and images, independently of application software, hardware and operating operating systems. Depending on the PostScript language, each PDF file contains text, fonts, vector graphics, raster images and other information needed to display it, including a full description of the fixed-layout flat document. PDF was standardized as ISO 32000 in 2008, and no royalties are required for its implementation.
