Gujarat is Modi's home constituency where he has been the Chief Minister for over a decade. He is keen to strengthen the party's hold in the home state. This is part of his forward strategy to build his support and maintain the momentum for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Modi has such influence in Gujarat that even the bridge collapse incident in Morbi district of the state a month ago could not become a major election issue. Contrary to expectations, the tragedy did not become the main subject of opposition attacks on the BJP. If there was a central figure, it was Narendra Modi.
Modi government not BJP government
PM Modi appeared larger than life throughout the Gujarat elections. No wonder BJP's electoral dictionary only has 'Modi Sarkar' and not 'BJP Sarkar'. This has already happened before, but this time BJP has asked for votes in the name of PM Modi. Despite being in power in Gujarat since 1995, the BJP has only mentioned the last 20 years of party rule in its campaign. Personal attacks helped PM Modi
Every time the opposition has made personal attacks on PM Modi, his popularity has increased. In 2007, when Congress leader Sonia Gandhi called him a 'dealer of death', a rally in support of the BJP took place across Gujarat and the BJP won 117 seats in a no-issue election. The 2012 election was fought on the emotional issue of supporting Modi to become the Prime Minister of the country in 2014. The highest voter turnout in that assembly election was 71.3 percent.
In 2017, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar called PM Modi 'ugly' and this highly publicized statement created a wave of sympathy in favor of PM Modi. However, the major issue in that election was the Patidar reservation movement for which the BJP suffered and its seats fell below 100. Now Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called PM Modi '100-headed Ravana'. Kharge meant that PM Modi's face is used from Lok Sabha to civic elections. But BJP people left no stone unturned to capitalize on this statement for the party's interest.
Votes of sympathy found in Gujarat?
Modi has become aggressive to garner sympathy votes for the BJP. A personal attack on PM Modi is declared as an attack on the pride of Gujarat as the PM is the biggest personality of the state in this generation. This time the focus of BJP's campaign has been Gujarati identity and pride. PM Modi often chants 'Aa Gujarat mein panchai hai' in election rallies, which has given life to the rallies.
